Banryukyo Gorge

A Hidden Valley of Dramatic Cliffs and Waterfalls

Banryukyo Gorge is a scenic natural destination in the Hino-miya area of Misato Town, Shimane Prefecture. Located upstream along the Tsunoya River, the gorge is surrounded by mountains and combines dramatic natural scenery with fascinating local legends.

Lush forests, clear flowing water, steep cliffs, and waterfalls create a peaceful landscape that feels far removed from the bustle of everyday life. As one of Misato Town’s notable natural attractions, Banryukyo is an ideal destination for travelers who enjoy walking, photography, and quiet outdoor experiences.

Dramatic Cliffs and Three Waterfalls

The most impressive feature of Banryukyo is the striking combination of near-vertical cliffs and waterfalls. After walking across an open riverside area of approximately 1,000 square meters, visitors suddenly encounter towering rock walls rising almost vertically on either side of the gorge.

Three waterfalls of different sizes cascade between the cliffs. Pools formed beneath the waterfalls, rugged rock surfaces, flowing water, and surrounding greenery come together to create a landscape that feels almost like a natural work of art.

Walking Down to the Waterfalls

A maintained walking trail allows visitors to experience the gorge from close range. The route gradually descends toward the waterfalls, taking approximately 10 minutes to reach the area below the falls.

Looking up at the waterfalls from below gives a particularly powerful impression. The sound of rushing water, cool spray, and fresh mountain air create a refreshing atmosphere and provide an opportunity to experience the natural environment at close quarters.

Banryukyo Nature Trail and Scenic Viewpoints

The Banryukyo Nature Observation Trail leads through the gorge and includes elevated sections of trail and several viewpoints. Visitors can also climb toward the top of the cliffs, where broader views over the gorge open up.

A suspension bridge once crossed above the waterfalls, providing an even more thrilling perspective. However, access across the former bridge is now restricted for safety reasons.

Even without the bridge, the designated viewpoints provide excellent views of the waterfalls and dramatic rock formations. The scenery changes with the seasons, with fresh green foliage in spring and summer and brilliant autumn colors adding different moods to the gorge.

Enjoying Nature in Banryukyo Park

Banryukyo Park has basic facilities such as sinks and toilets, making it possible to enjoy outdoor activities such as camping and picnicking.

Listening to the sound of the clear stream while surrounded by mountains is a relaxing way to escape from the noise of everyday life. The surrounding forest is also well suited to forest bathing and nature observation.

Birdsong, flowing water, and the changing light through the trees create a tranquil environment for a leisurely walk. Because the area includes natural trails and uneven terrain, comfortable walking shoes and practical outdoor clothing are recommended.

The Legend of Kagamigafuchi

A Tale of Love, Jealousy, and a Dragon

Banryukyo is also associated with an old and tragic local legend dating back to the Nanboku-cho period of Japanese history. The story concerns Gentaifu Munetoshi, a retainer of the Ogasawara family, his wife, and a female servant.

According to the legend, jealousy and complicated feelings led the two women into a bitter struggle. In the course of their confrontation, both women fell into the valley below. Their spirits are said to have transformed into dragons that continued to fight with one another.

The place associated with this story is known as Kagamigafuchi, meaning “Mirror Pool,” a name that remains today.

The Hair-Hanging Pine

A rock corner in the area is associated with a tree known as the “Hair-Hanging Pine.” It is said to be another remnant of the legend.

Munetoshi himself is also said to have regretted what had happened and ultimately taken his own life. According to local tradition, his grave still leans in the direction of Banryukyo.

These stories add a human and historical dimension to the spectacular natural landscape. For visitors, the gorge is therefore not simply a place of beautiful scenery, but also a place where local memories and legends have become part of the landscape.

Access and Tips for Visiting

Banryukyo can be reached from National Route 375. Cross Yamato Ohashi Bridge and follow the signs toward the gorge.

Public transportation options are limited, so traveling by car is the most convenient way to visit. Because the gorge is located in a mountainous natural environment, visitors should take care while walking and pay attention to trail conditions and their surroundings.

Enjoying the Gorge Responsibly

Banryukyo is a place where visitors can experience a relatively quiet natural environment. To help preserve its beauty, take all garbage home with you and follow local rules and trail etiquette.

Respecting the peaceful atmosphere of the gorge allows both local residents and future visitors to continue enjoying its forests, waterfalls, and clear streams.

A Peaceful Gorge Where Nature and Legend Meet

Banryukyo Gorge represents the natural beauty of Misato Town, combining dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, clear mountain streams, and rich seasonal scenery with stories handed down through generations.

The contrast between the tranquil forest and the powerful waterfalls creates an unforgettable atmosphere, while the legend of Kagamigafuchi adds a sense of mystery and historical romance to the landscape.

For travelers seeking a quiet escape into nature, Banryukyo offers an opportunity to slow down, listen to the water, and enjoy the changing scenery of the mountains. Those interested in Japanese folklore and historic local traditions will also find another layer of fascination in the stories associated with this secluded gorge.
