Discover the Formation of Mount Sanbe
A Landscape Shaped by Ancient Volcanic Activity
One of the museum’s central themes is the geological history of Mount Sanbe. Exhibits explain how repeated volcanic eruptions shaped the mountain and surrounding landscape over long periods of time.
Large-scale images and actual rock specimens show how volcanic ash, lava, and other materials accumulated and transformed the land. Visitors can gain a vivid understanding of the enormous forces that have shaped the region.
Some exhibits recreate volcanic activity through immersive video, giving visitors the sensation of being surrounded by the power of an eruption. Quiz-style displays also make learning about geology enjoyable for families and younger visitors.
The Sea of Japan and Shimane’s Natural Environment
The museum’s exhibits extend beyond Mount Sanbe to the wider natural environment of Shimane Prefecture. Visitors can learn about the geological processes behind the formation of the Sea of Japan, as well as wetland environments around Lake Shinji and Lake Nakaumi.
Exhibits also introduce endangered species and other wildlife unique to the region. These displays provide an opportunity to consider the importance of protecting local ecosystems and preserving biodiversity for future generations.
Highlights of the Museum
The Sanbe Buried Forest: A Glimpse into a Prehistoric Landscape
One of the museum’s most impressive attractions is the exhibition of the Sanbe Azukihara Buried Forest. Around 4,000 years ago, volcanic activity buried enormous cedar trees beneath the ground. Some of these trees were later excavated and preserved remarkably well.
Standing beside these giant trees gives visitors a powerful sense of the scale of the ancient forest and the long history of the natural environment. The preserved trees offer a rare glimpse into the landscape of Japan during the Jomon period.
Meet Shimane’s Wildlife
The museum houses numerous taxidermied animals and botanical specimens, introducing visitors to the wide variety of plants and animals found in Shimane.
Living plants and animals can also be observed in terrariums, allowing visitors to experience nature in a more immediate way.
The children’s “Mysterious Forest” area is particularly popular with families. Children can touch animal fur, listen to bird calls, and explore nature using their senses rather than simply looking at displays.
Planetarium and Observatory
One of the Largest Planetariums in the San’in Region
Sanbe Nature Museum Sahimel features one of the largest planetariums in the San’in region. Its dome recreates a spectacular star-filled sky, creating the feeling of standing beneath the night sky itself.
Programs explain seasonal constellations and introduce different aspects of astronomy and space. The presentations are designed to be enjoyable for both children and adults, making them a relaxing and educational part of a visit.
Experience Real Astronomical Observation
The museum also has a public observatory equipped with professional astronomical instruments, including a 60-centimeter reflecting telescope and a Coudé-type refracting telescope.
Stargazing sessions are held every Saturday, providing opportunities to observe stars and planets through the telescopes. On clear days, visitors can also observe the Sun during daytime programs.
Being able to lie back and gaze at the stars creates a memorable experience that feels far removed from everyday life. The observatory offers a chance to enjoy the wonders of the universe both day and night.
Experience Nature Beyond the Museum
Outdoor Observation and Field Activities
Sanbe Nature Museum Sahimel is more than an indoor museum. It also serves as a visitor center for Daisen-Oki National Park, connecting visitors with the natural environment surrounding Mount Sanbe.
Natural observation areas extend around the museum, where visitors can encounter local plants and wildlife. A field information area also provides information about the natural environment and hiking routes around Mount Sanbe.
This makes it possible to combine what you learn inside the museum with first-hand experiences in the surrounding landscape.
Library and Hands-On Learning Areas
A library area contains books and reference materials covering natural science and the local environment. From children’s illustrated guides to more specialized resources, visitors can explore topics that catch their interest and deepen their knowledge.

From the immense power of volcanic activity and the ancient buried forest to local wildlife and the vastness of space, the museum brings together many different aspects of the natural world in one place.
