Center House: A Flower Paradise in Full Bloom All Year
One of Japan’s Largest Flower Exhibition Greenhouses
The centerpiece of Matsue Vogel Park is the Center House, an enormous flower greenhouse covering approximately 8,000 square meters. The temperature inside is maintained at around 20°C, creating ideal conditions for flowers to bloom throughout the year regardless of the season or weather outside.
More than 10,000 plants representing approximately 1,500 varieties, including begonias and fuchsias, fill the greenhouse with brilliant colors. Flowers hang from the ceiling, colorful pots decorate the pathways, and the fragrance of flowers fills the air. Walking through the greenhouse feels like stepping into a completely different world.
Dining and Relaxation Surrounded by Flowers
The Center House also contains the restaurant Flora and a flower shop. Visitors can enjoy light meals, lunch, seasonal desserts, and drinks while surrounded by flowers in full bloom.
Another popular attraction is the Happy Chair, known as a romantic good-luck spot associated with love and happy relationships. It is a favorite place for couples and married visitors to take commemorative photographs. Weddings are also occasionally held inside the flower-filled greenhouse, making it a memorable setting for celebrating special occasions.
Meet a Wide Variety of Birds
Tropical Aviary
The Tropical Aviary recreates the atmosphere of a lush tropical jungle. Visitors can see colorful and unusual birds from tropical regions, including toucans, hornbills, and turacos.
Because visitors can observe many of these birds at close range, the experience is much more immersive than viewing birds from behind a conventional enclosure. The combination of tropical vegetation and freely moving birds creates the feeling of entering a living jungle.
Penguin Walk
One of Matsue Vogel Park’s most popular attractions is the Cape Penguin Walk. Visitors can watch the penguins slowly make their way along the designated route. Seasonal costumes add an especially charming touch to the experience, making the penguin walk a favorite among children and adults alike.
Waterfall Aviary
The Waterfall Aviary recreates a waterside environment complete with flowing water and a waterfall. Swans, black swans, geese, and other waterfowl live in this peaceful setting.
Rather than simply observing the birds from outside a cage, visitors can walk through the same spacious environment, creating a more natural and intimate experience. The sound of flowing water combined with the calm movements of the birds makes this one of the most relaxing areas in the park.
Paradise Hall: Up-Close Bird Encounters
Paradise Hall offers visitors the chance to get even closer to some of the park’s birds. Depending on the scheduled activities, guests may be able to hold birds such as toucans and turacos on their arms or feed them.
Feeling the warmth and weight of a bird at close range is an experience that cannot be fully captured through photographs or videos. These hands-on encounters can create memorable experiences for both children and adults.
Exciting Bird Shows and Outdoor Events
Open Square
Open Square is the park’s outdoor event area, where visitors can watch impressive bird and falconry shows featuring hawks, eagles, and falcons.
Watching these powerful birds soar through the open sky and dive through the air is an exhilarating experience. On clear days, the open setting also provides beautiful views toward Lake Shinji, adding to the atmosphere of the performances.
Owl Flight Show
The Owl Flight Show, held inside the Center House, is another particularly popular attraction. A large owl spreads its wings and silently flies just above the audience, demonstrating both the power and remarkable grace of these birds.
The experience offers a rare opportunity to observe an owl’s flight at extremely close range and appreciate the natural abilities of these fascinating birds.
Bird and Falcon Shows
At Open Square, hawks, eagles, and falcons take to the sky during scheduled bird and falcon shows. Their speed, agility, and precision are impressive to watch, while the interaction between the birds and their handlers provides an insight into the trust developed between humans and these highly trained animals.
Waterfowl Pond and Penguin Pool
The park also features a Waterfowl Pond and Penguin Pool, where visitors can observe swans, pelicans, penguins, and other birds enjoying the water.
Pelican feeding sessions are especially popular. Seeing these large birds gather around their keepers provides an opportunity to appreciate their impressive size and enormous bills at close range. The park also has an emu area and other bird-related attractions nearby, making this part of the park a rewarding area to explore.
Panoramic Views of Lake Shinji
Kunibiki Observation Deck
At the rear of the park is the Kunibiki Observation Deck, located approximately 53 meters above sea level. From here, visitors can look across the park and enjoy a wide panoramic view of Lake Shinji and the surrounding landscape.
On clear days, Mount Daisen, sometimes called the “Mount Fuji of Hoki,” can also be seen in the distance. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons, making the observation deck a popular spot for photography.
Sunset is particularly atmospheric. As the sun sinks toward the horizon, the surface of Lake Shinji can take on warm shades of red and orange, creating a peaceful landscape that is characteristic of the Matsue area.
Enjoy Local Food at Soba Restaurant Fumian
Fresh Soba Beside the Waterfowl Pond
After exploring the bird and flower exhibits, visitors can enjoy a meal at Soba Restaurant Fumian beside the Waterfowl Pond.
The restaurant serves Izumo soba, one of Shimane’s best-known local specialties. The soba is made using buckwheat flour ground at the watermill on the park grounds and is prepared as authentic 100% buckwheat soba without wheat flour as a binder.
Known for its rich aroma and distinctive texture, Izumo soba is an excellent way to experience local cuisine while taking a break from sightseeing.
An All-Weather Park for Comfortable Sightseeing
One of Matsue Vogel Park’s greatest advantages is its all-weather design. The flower greenhouses, bird aviaries, and major facilities are connected by covered walkways, allowing visitors to continue sightseeing comfortably even on rainy or snowy days.
The park has also been designed with accessibility in mind. Most facilities can be accessed by wheelchair users and visitors with strollers. Where certain areas, such as moving walkways, have limitations, assistance and transportation services are available.
These features make Matsue Vogel Park a convenient destination for families with young children, older travelers, and visitors who prefer a relaxed sightseeing experience.
Shops and Rest Areas
Several shops around the park sell original merchandise and souvenirs inspired by the flowers and birds found here. Many items are exclusive to Matsue Vogel Park, making them memorable souvenirs of a visit.
Benches and rest areas are also located throughout the grounds. Combined with the covered walkways, these facilities make it easy to explore the park at a comfortable pace without rushing from one attraction to another.
Convenient Access from Central Matsue
Matsue Vogel Park is particularly convenient for travelers using public transportation. The entrance is located just a short walk from Matsue Vogel Park Station on the Ichibata Electric Railway Kita-Matsue Line, making the park easy to reach by train.
The park is also located along National Route 431 and is approximately a 15-minute drive from central Matsue. It can therefore be easily combined with a scenic drive along the shores of Lake Shinji.
A Special Day Surrounded by Flowers and Birds
Matsue Vogel Park is a unique attraction where visitors can enjoy beautiful flowers and encounter approximately 90 species and 400 birds in a single destination. Its enormous flower greenhouse remains in bloom throughout the year, while the bird aviaries and scheduled shows provide opportunities to observe a fascinating variety of birds at close range.
Because the main attractions are connected by covered walkways, the park can be enjoyed regardless of the season or weather. From colorful flowers and tropical birds to adorable penguins, powerful birds of prey, and peaceful waterfowl, there is something to discover throughout the grounds.
Combined with the natural beauty of Lake Shinji, Matsue Vogel Park offers a relaxing escape from everyday life. For travelers visiting Matsue, it is an enjoyable place to experience the beauty of flowers, the charm of birds, and the peaceful atmosphere of the lakeside landscape all in one day.
