Chibu Red Cliff

A Magnificent Landscape That Reveals the History of the Earth

Chibu Red Cliff is a spectacular series of towering sea cliffs along the western coast of Chibu Village in the Oki Islands, Shimane Prefecture. Also known as “Akakabe” or “Akadaki,” the cliffs are distinguished by their vivid reddish-brown rock surfaces.

Rising approximately 50 to 200 meters above the sea and extending for about 1 kilometer from north to south, this enormous natural wall is one of the most impressive landmarks on Chiburijima Island.

A Protected Natural Treasure of Japan

Because of its exceptional scenic beauty and geological value, Chibu Red Cliff was designated as both a Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument of Japan in 1935. It is also located within a Special Protection Zone of Daisen-Oki National Park, where its natural environment is carefully protected.

The cliff is also an important geosite within the Oki UNESCO Global Geopark. The exposed volcanic formations provide visitors with a rare opportunity to observe geological evidence of the Earth’s long history.

A Spectacular Landscape Born from Volcanic Activity Millions of Years Ago

The Secret Behind the Red Rocks

The distinctive reddish-brown color of Chibu Red Cliff is the result of ancient volcanic activity. Approximately 6 million years ago, large-scale volcanic eruptions helped shape the Oki Islands. Iron contained in the lava reacted with oxygen and became iron oxide, causing the volcanic rocks to turn red and brown.

Repeated volcanic eruptions also produced layers of volcanic material that accumulated over time. These layers create striking striped patterns across the cliff face, allowing visitors to see a geological record formed by successive volcanic activity.

A Window into the Interior of an Ancient Volcano

Near the center of the cliff, distinctive white and gray rock formations can be seen cutting vertically through the reddish rock. These formations are associated with an ancient volcanic conduit, where magma once rose toward the surface.

Over immense periods of time, the powerful waves and winds of the Sea of Japan eroded the surrounding rock, exposing what looks like a cross-section of an ancient volcano. This unusual landscape is highly significant from a geological perspective.

A Dramatic Landscape That Changes with the Light

One of the charms of Chibu Red Cliff is the way its appearance changes depending on the time of day and weather. Under the daytime sun, the reddish-brown cliffs stand out dramatically against the blue sea. Toward evening, the setting sun illuminates the rock and brings out deeper shades of red.

At sunset, the combination of the dark blue sea, vivid red cliffs, and changing colors of the sky creates an especially atmospheric landscape. This dramatic scenery has also made the cliff a popular destination for photographers.

Two Ways to Experience Chibu Red Cliff

Views from Land

Visitors can view Chibu Red Cliff from a viewpoint on land, where the scale of the entire cliff can be appreciated from above. The combination of the enormous rock wall and the wide expanse of the Sea of Japan creates an impressive panoramic view.

Some areas around the viewpoint may not have protective fences. Visitors should therefore watch their footing carefully, especially when traveling with young children, and follow local safety guidance while enjoying the scenery.

A Sightseeing Cruise from the Sea

For a closer perspective, visitors can join a sightseeing cruise from Kurii Port. The approximately one-hour cruise circles the island and allows passengers to observe Chibu Red Cliff directly from the sea.

From the water, visitors can see details of the cliff face that are difficult to appreciate from land and experience the sheer scale of the volcanic formations at close range. An evening cruise can be particularly memorable, as the setting sun casts warm colors across the red cliffs.

Guided cruises may also offer explanations in Japanese, English, French, and Portuguese, making the experience accessible to visitors from overseas.

A Landscape Connected to History and Culture

Chibu Red Cliff has been known to people for centuries. The Edo-period geographical record “Zōho Onshūki” refers to the cliffs by the name “Kojinodake,” indicating that the dramatic landscape had already attracted attention in earlier times.

In the modern era, geologists, landscape specialists, and other experts recognized the exceptional value of the cliffs, contributing to their designation as a Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. Chinese-style poems and other works inspired by the landscape have also survived, demonstrating that Chibu Red Cliff has attracted attention not only for its geological features but also for its artistic appeal.

In 2009, the area was also used as a filming location for the NHK television drama series “Dandan.” The dramatic scenery of Chibu was consequently introduced to audiences throughout Japan.

Access to Chibu Red Cliff

Chibu Red Cliff can be reached in approximately 30 minutes by car from the Kurii Port Ferry Terminal, followed by about a five-minute walk from the parking area.

For exploring Chiburijima, traveling by car or rental bicycle can be convenient. Visitors planning to explore several attractions should check transportation options and conditions in advance.

A Spectacular Natural Heritage of Chiburijima

Chibu Red Cliff is much more than a scenic viewpoint. Its vivid colors, enormous cliffs, and exposed volcanic formations offer a direct glimpse into the geological forces that shaped the Oki Islands millions of years ago.

Standing before the cliffs, visitors can appreciate both the immense scale of the landscape and the extraordinary length of time represented in its layers of rock. The combination of powerful natural scenery, geological history, and the peaceful atmosphere of island life makes Chibu Red Cliff a particularly memorable destination on Chiburijima.

Where dramatic volcanic landscapes meet the quiet rhythm of island life, Chibu Red Cliff offers an unforgettable encounter with the natural history of the Oki Islands.
