A Waterfall with Both Power and Delicate Beauty
Fukaura Falls has a drop of approximately 40 meters. Clear water originating from Mount Yokoo flows down the dark rock face, dividing into numerous narrow streams as it descends.
The many streams create a delicate pattern resembling a spider’s web, while the height and volume of the waterfall give it a powerful and impressive presence. Because there are relatively few tall trees around the waterfall, visitors can enjoy unobstructed views of the entire cascade from several different angles.
Pure Water and Local Legends
The exceptionally clear water of Fukaura Falls has earned it a place among Shimane Prefecture’s 100 Selected Famous Waters, a recognition of the area’s outstanding water quality and natural environment.
Another fascinating feature is a smaller waterfall known as Shiraito Falls, which appears only after rainfall. Local people traditionally regard Fukaura Falls as the “male waterfall” and Shiraito Falls as the “female waterfall.”
Because Shiraito Falls depends on weather and rainfall, the landscape can look quite different from one visit to another. After rain, the appearance of the two waterfalls creates an especially fascinating natural scene.
A Quiet Natural Escape
Fukaura Falls is approximately 40 minutes by car from Saigo Port. Located in a secluded and richly forested part of Dogo Island, it is an appealing destination for travelers who want to experience the quieter side of the Oki Islands.
The combination of dark volcanic rock, brilliant white water, and peaceful natural surroundings gives Fukaura Falls a distinctive atmosphere. Take your time to appreciate the changing streams of water and the dramatic landscape that makes this hidden waterfall one of Dogo Island’s memorable natural attractions.
