Nakamura Beach (Oki)

A Beautiful Beach of White Sand, Blue Sea, and Pine Trees

Nakamura Beach is one of the beautiful seaside destinations on Dogo Island in the Oki Islands of Shimane Prefecture. The beach is known for its exceptionally clear blue water, broad white-sand shoreline, and pine trees growing along the coast, creating a classic Japanese landscape known as “hakusha seisho”—the harmonious scenery of white sand and green pine trees.

The sea is remarkably clear and generally calm, making Nakamura Beach a popular destination for families with children. The gently sloping sandy beach provides plenty of space for swimming, playing in the sand, and collecting seashells. During the summer, the beach becomes a lively gathering place for both local residents and visitors.

Crystal-Clear Waters and a Scenic Coastal Landscape

The greatest attraction of Nakamura Beach is its beautiful sea. On sunny days, the water can shine in brilliant shades of emerald green, and its clarity is sometimes enough to see the seabed from the surface.

Behind the white sandy shore is a lush pine forest, creating a landscape that perfectly captures the natural beauty of the Oki Islands. The relatively shallow water makes the beach suitable for families with young children, while a diving platform provides another way for visitors to enjoy the sea.

When the weather and sea conditions are calm, the surface of the water can become almost mirror-like. Simply sitting by the shore and listening to the waves offers a peaceful taste of island life far removed from the pace of the city.

More Than Just a Swimming Beach

There are many ways to enjoy Nakamura Beach beyond swimming. A breakwater near the beach provides an opportunity for fishing, and the rich waters surrounding the Oki Islands are home to a variety of fish that change with the seasons.

The beach is also ideal for a leisurely coastal walk. Visitors can feel the sea breeze, enjoy the changing colors of the water and sky, or watch the sunset over the Sea of Japan. Although summer is the main swimming season, the coastal landscape remains attractive throughout the year.

Camping Beside the Sea at Nakamura Campground

Located directly beside the beach, Nakamura Campground allows visitors to spend more time surrounded by the sea and nature. The campground lies among the Nakamura Black Pine Grove, which has been designated a natural monument by Okinoshima Town.

The mature pine trees provide plenty of shade, making the campground a pleasant place to stay during the warmer months. Tent rentals are also available, allowing travelers to enjoy an outdoor experience without having to bring all their own camping equipment.

At night, the island’s relatively dark surroundings offer beautiful views of the starry sky. In the morning, the rising sun illuminates the Sea of Japan, creating a peaceful scene to enjoy from the campground. Falling asleep to the sound of waves is a memorable way to experience the natural environment of the Oki Islands.

Campground Facilities

The campground provides facilities including a rest area, toilets, and paid hot-water showers, making it convenient for travelers who want to combine a day at the beach with an overnight stay.

Combining swimming, camping, and coastal exploration allows visitors to experience the natural beauty of Oki at a relaxed pace rather than simply making a short stop at the beach.

Local Seafood at “Sazae-mura”

For a taste of local Oki cuisine, visitors can stop at Sazae-mura Honten, a restaurant located in the beach management building. The restaurant specializes in dishes prepared with fresh seafood from the surrounding waters.

One of its best-known dishes is sazae-don, a rice bowl topped with plenty of sazae, or turban sea snail. The firm, satisfying texture of the shellfish pairs with a flavorful broth made with flying-fish stock, creating a distinctive taste of Oki.

The dish has even been featured in the popular Japanese food manga and television series Oishinbo, helping make it a well-known local specialty.

Other menu choices include Agodashi Nakamura Ramen made with flying-fish broth, mekabu seaweed soup, and soft-serve ice cream flavored with local sea salt. The casual restaurant has a welcoming atmosphere, while traditional fishing flags displayed from the ceiling add to its distinctive island character.

A Beach Protected by the Local Community

The beautiful environment of Nakamura Beach is maintained through the efforts of the local community. Residents and local high school students regularly take part in beach-cleaning activities, helping preserve the shoreline for both visitors and future generations.

Visitors can help protect this special environment by taking their trash with them, following local rules, and treating the beach and surrounding natural areas with care.

A Peaceful Place to Experience Oki’s Nature

Nakamura Beach brings together many of the experiences that make the Oki Islands special: exceptionally clear water, white sand, green pine forests, outdoor activities, and fresh local seafood.

Whether you spend the day swimming and playing on the beach, fishing from the breakwater, camping beneath the pine trees, walking along the coast, or enjoying a bowl of local sazae-don, the beach offers plenty of opportunities to slow down and enjoy the island’s natural rhythm.

For travelers looking to escape the crowds and experience the peaceful beauty of the Sea of Japan, Nakamura Beach is a wonderful place to relax and connect with the natural landscape of the Oki Islands.
