Saginoyu Onsen

A Historic Hot Spring Town Shrouded in the Legend of the White Heron

Saginoyu Onsen, located in Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture, is one of the San’in region’s historic hot spring destinations. Surrounded by peaceful countryside and abundant nature, this quiet hot spring village is associated with a beautiful legend of a white heron that healed its injured leg in the local waters. This story is said to have given the area its name, meaning “Heron Hot Spring.”

Rather than a large entertainment district, Saginoyu Onsen consists of just a few traditional inns, creating a calm and intimate atmosphere. Visitors can leave behind the pace of everyday life and enjoy the soothing waters in peaceful surroundings. Nearby attractions include the internationally renowned Adachi Museum of Art and the Yasugi-bushi Performance Hall, where visitors can experience the traditional folk music and dance of Yasugi.

The Legend of the White Heron

The history of Saginoyu Onsen is said to date back to the Jinki era (724–729). According to legend, a white heron once descended into this area and soaked its injured leg in a natural hot spring. After its wound healed, local people discovered the therapeutic waters.

The legend of the white heron continues to be passed down today and remains an important symbol of the hot spring town. Walking through the quiet surroundings, visitors can easily imagine the landscape of centuries ago, when the heron is said to have rested beside the spring.

A Hot Spring Once Loved by Samurai Lords

During the Sengoku period, the area flourished as the castle town of Gassan Toda Castle, the stronghold of the powerful Amago clan. Saginoyu Onsen was known as a “goyuden”, or private hot spring reserved for feudal lords, and was enjoyed by successive military leaders and local rulers.

In 1666, however, a devastating flood caused extensive damage to the hot spring area, burying the original spring source. Repeated attempts were made to recover the spring, but further flooding followed, and the hot spring temporarily disappeared from local life.

Near the end of the Meiji period, the spring was rediscovered when Tanabe Rokuzaemon was carrying out drainage work in a rice field. Water began bubbling up from the ground once again, marking the revival of what is now Saginoyu Onsen. Its history is one of disappearance and renewal, allowing the hot spring tradition to survive into the present day.

Abundant Natural Hot Spring Water

Approximately 600 Liters of Spring Water per Minute

One of Saginoyu Onsen’s defining features is its abundant supply of natural hot spring water. Approximately 600 liters of spring water flow every minute, allowing the local inns to offer luxurious baths supplied directly from the source without artificial reheating or recirculation.

The water is classified as a radium-containing sodium-calcium chloride-sulfate spring. Its temperature ranges from approximately 45°C to 54°C. The water is clear and has a smooth, light texture, while the warmth can linger pleasantly after bathing.

Known as a “Beauty Hot Spring”

Saginoyu Onsen is also known as a “beauty hot spring”. Its mineral-rich water has traditionally been associated with supporting healthy skin and promoting the body’s natural circulation, making the baths popular with visitors seeking relaxation and wellness.

The waters have traditionally been used for bathing associated with conditions such as neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, sensitivity to cold, chronic skin problems, and fatigue. Today, visitors mainly come to enjoy the relaxing experience and the soothing warmth of the natural spring.

In winter, steam rising from the baths can envelop the hot spring village in a particularly atmospheric scene. Soaking in warm water while looking out over the quiet countryside offers a deeply relaxing experience for both body and mind.

A Peaceful Hot Spring Village Surrounded by Nature

Saginoyu Onsen lies in a rural area along the Iinashi River. The surrounding landscape extends toward the Chugoku Mountains, offering beautiful seasonal scenery throughout the year.

Cherry blossoms appear in spring, lush rice fields dominate the summer landscape, autumn brings colorful foliage, and winter can transform the countryside into a snowy scene. For travelers looking to escape the noise of cities and slow down, Saginoyu Onsen provides a peaceful setting.

The surrounding area is also included within the Shimizu-Gassan Prefectural Natural Park, helping to preserve its rich natural environment.
